What is Kings of War?
What is kings of war?
I’m sure you’ve seen all the excitement and hype that the Kings of War 2nd edition Kickstarter has created buzzing through the Mantic world. For the people who are already involved in Kings of War, this is a much welcomed revision to the rules and history of a game they have invested time, money and dedication too. This is something that THEY wanted and so is something that we have given them. But we have to remember, not everyone who follows Mantic Games through all of our social media may play Kings of War. So what I’d like to do is give all of these people a little insight into the world of Kings of war and hopefully entice them into this magnificent fantasy war game!
So what is Kings of War? Well in a nutshell, Kings of war is a game of mass combat between mighty armies in a fantasy world torn apart by epic conflict and legendary battles. Its fast-paced, competitive rules make the game ideal for massed battles between hundreds of troops – and with Mantic’s range, it’s possible to do just that without breaking the bank!
But what does that actually mean? Let’s break it down into a little bit more detail and really drive home why Kings of war is such a fantastic game.
First and foremost, Kings of war is a game where large army’s battle to either win objectives or (my personal favourite) to annihilate the enemy force. As opposed to other Mantic games, such as DreadBall or Deadzone, Kings of War will have far more miniatures on the table. Your entire faction in Deadzone may only just be the same size as one unit in Kings of War, sometimes even smaller, when you look at the 30 model horde units such as the Orc Axs.
As for the rules, they are kept sweet and simple.
Speed: this shows how far the unit can move in inches and its charge range is double the speed
Melee: the value which you need to beat to hit an enemy in combat
Range: the value which you need to beat to hit an enemy at range
Defence: the value you need to beat to cause damage to an enemy
Attack: the amount of dice you roll when attacking with a unit
Nerve: the amount of wounds a unit can take before becoming wavered and then routed
All of these values are rolled on a D6
But don’t just take my word for it. Go and download a FREE COPY of the first edition rules and see what you think for yourself!
Now what makes Kings or War stand out from other fantasy war games is the way the units work. Usually Units comprise of multiple models to make up the unit. For example, a 40 man horde unit of orcs will comprise of 40 separate orcs, having one removed for every wound that unit takes. With Kings of War a unit has a 40 man unit footprint. This means that as long as the size of the base equals the same size as 40 models, you can use anything you like to fill that space. This is great for making scenic bases, dioramas and using unit fillers. But it gets better still!
In Kings of War a unit has a nerve value instead of each model counting as a wound. What this means is that once the units nerve is broken, the entire unit is removed from the game. This is fantastic as you will always have a brilliant looking complete army on the table. When a unit loses its nerve it is completely removed. This means that you won’t have units on the table with models missing from it, looking messy and incomplete. You either have a full unit or nothing at all! This is great not only aesthetically, but it also make setting up and clearing away so much easier as all the models in that unit can be fixed to one large base ready to be pulled out of your gaming case and put straight onto the table!
King of War is not only a fantasy war game, it is also a world. Set in its own universe, Kings of War has an even more extensive background in development as we speak. We want Kings of War to not only be a game of mass combat between huge armies, we want it to be a magical world that you can invest in, somewhere you can connect with and find excitement in.
