The Lion’s Claws

Fire Made Flesh Is Now Available for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

“In a coat of gold or a coat of red, a lion still has claws, and mine are long and sharp, my lord, as long and sharp as yours.”
–George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords

Fire Made Flesh, the third Chapter Pack in the Conquest and Defiance cycle for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, is now available online through our webstore and at your local retailer!

This Chapter Pack offers new Warships for House Greyjoy and powerful neutral Mercenaries, and it also introduces new, prized versions of three of Westeros’s most storied blades: Ice, Blackfyre, and Heartsbane. These ancient Weapons are fearsome in battle, but not every fight can be won with strength of arms. Some struggles unfold in darkened hallways, at secretive meetings, and through whispered promises. To win the game of thrones, you must master both overt and covert combat. In Fire Made Flesh, every House finds new ways to pursue their goals openly and in secret. Today, we’ll look at some of House Lannister’s new tools for gaining the upper hand in the struggle for the Iron Throne.

As Long and Sharp as Yours

Throughout the saga of A Song of Ice and Fire, House Lannister has proved adept at winning conflicts both on the field of battle and in the courts of King’s Landing. The cards that House Lannister receives in Fire Made Flesh further enhance their ability to best their foes and counter their opponents’ schemes.

The first card House Lannister gains in Fire Made Flesh is Tyrion Lannister’s Squire, Podrick Payne (Fire Made Flesh, 46). Podrick Payne can make a significant addition to any of House Lannister’s schemes, serving to incapacitate your opponent and destroy his hand of cards in a surprising way. Podrick Payne bears the prized 1 and stealth keywords, and he grants any copy of Tyrion Lannister a Military icon. Still, his true strength comes from his passive ability, which reads, “Each card discarded from an opponent’s hand reduces his or her draw cap by 1 (to a minimum of 0) until the end of the round.

Each player normally has a draw cap of three cards, meaning that players can draw no more than three cards outside of the two cards drawn in the draw phase. By attacking your opponent’s draw cap, you can severely deplete his options and his card draw. Your primary way to discard cards from your opponent’s hand is through Intrigue challenges, meaning Podrick pairs naturally with cards that enhance your Intrigue challenges, such as The Power Behind the Throne (Lions of the Rock, 48) and Game of Thrones (Lions of the Rock, 53).

While attacking your opponent’s draw cap, you may find yourself needing some additional card draw of your own. If so, look no further than The Mander (Fire Made Flesh, 47). This location can be knelt during the challenges phase to allow you to draw a card. If any player has a prized plot revealed, The Mander becomes even more effective, allowing you to draw two cards, and inviting you to take advantage of prized plots such as Common Cause (Fire Made Flesh, 60). If you’re using Common Cause in addition to Podrick Payne and The Mander, you gain additional draw, and if you have enough House affiliations represented among your characters, you could demolish your opponent’s draw cap in one challenge.

The final card House Lannister gains in Fire Made Flesh is the event There Are No Men Like Me (Fire Made Flesh, 48). Playing this event during the challenges phase allows you to choose a character. That character gains a Military icon and doesn’t kneel to attack or defend during Military challenges. One ideal character to target with this event is Cersei Lannister (Lions of the Rock, 6). If you’re using The Power Behind the Throne as your agenda, you gain an additional Intrigue challenge, and Cersei Lannister claims power and gains either stealth or deadly whenever you win an Intrigue challenge. You can make your Intrigue challenges first, depleting your opponent’s options and granting Cersei power and keywords. Then, by playing There Are No Men Like Me on Cersei, she can bring her prowess to Military challenges as well.
