Sculpting the Lord of Mictal
by Doug Hamilton
When I started on the first Ancient Ones sculpt last year, Camazotz, I already knew there were more monsters and units coming for this new Faction. Of course, I didn’t know which ones I would end up with—in fact, I hadn’t even see the art yet! Just the same, I was already excited about Camazotz, and so I was very eager to see the next concepts that came my way.
And then came the next one: Lord of Mictal, another great concept by Andrea Uderzo, who never disappoints. At this stage, having completed Camazotz—which had been one of the more challenging sculpts I’ve worked on—I felt more confident about my understanding of style for the Ancient Ones. So, I took a closer look at the art and quickly recognized that the headdress was going to be the big key to making this sculpt look its best. From Mictal’s skull face and large eyes to the snake-like creature sculpted into the headdress, I could tell this was an important piece.
The workflow on this project went pretty well with mostly minor changes. Often I’ll receive notes like the ones below showing me the changes that Ron Kruzie has in mind. Once I make those changes, I send the files back over for another review as we slowly finalize different pieces of the overall model.
Many small changes and tweaks came up as we went along. Ultimately, we were able to determine a pose to make this Ancient One ready to wreck some buildings and stomp around in your games of Monsterpocalypse! I got a chance to see a prototype of Lord of Mictal when visiting Privateer HQ a few weeks ago, and I was very happy with the results! So, below are a few renders and the picture of the prototype I took (which was shown at LVO just a week later). I hear tell that Emanuel Class will be diving deeper into the background and playstyle of this new addition to Monsterpocalypse, so here’s hoping between the two of us, we’ve motivated you to add Lord Mictal to your latest and greatest games!
