Experimental Tanks: One of the main goals of the Necropolis Project was to establish and maintain inter-planetary warp-gates. Those gates could theoretically eliminate the need for unreliable spacecraft to safely traverse the warp.
Experiments to open and maintain stable planetary warp-portals failed many times with terrible consequences. Breached portals spewed twisted, hellish entities from their event horizons, and the city was ravaged.
Beasts of every known form, and many which defied classification entirely, spilled out in ever increasing numbers. The most common of these, the warp zombies, were quickly captured and studied.
However, the breaches only widened with time and the number and scale of invading entities increased sharply, with the denizens of outer dimensions writhing into our reality and overrunning the city completely.
That event sealed the fate of the project and brought inquisitorial sanction upon the entire planet. Needless to say the Experimental Tanks are now just a bygone relic of the past, a pale reminder of when humanity thought itself capable of capturing and controlling such beings.
