Acting as a transitional vehicle between the short-barrelled earlier marques of this iconic German tank and the most numerous versions of the tank with it’s applique armour and schürzen plates, the Ausf. H and J, was to receive the long 7.5cm KwK 40 L/43 main gun on Hitler’s direct orders. This was as a direct result of the emergence of the Soviet T34 tanks on the battlefields of the Eastern Front and dominating most of the German armour.

The long-barrelled gun was due to be installed into the Ausf. G version events in the east brought that plan forwards. The F2 was more than match for Soviet and British tanks and the British were to refer to the new German tank as the ‘Mark Four Special’, out of respect for it’s performance against their armoured formations in the Western Desert campaign.

Significant changes were made to the Ausf G version of the Panzer IV, the backbone of the German war effort and would be built in huge numbers compared to other armoured vehicles in the war. As with many tank conversions, the line between one variant and the next is a blurry one, with some enhancements being added before others, rather than in one go.
