Monsterpocalypse: Tritons v Subterran Uprising
by Emanuel Class
Ahoy, Monsterpocalytes! Let’s dive right into this week’s Monsterpocalypse Insider by exploring the deep dark depths of the Triton and Subterran Uprising Factions.
The Ocean Hydra is a two-headed gun platform that shoots hot jets of boiling water at its target. With Indirect Fire, that water ignores cover and with Dual Attack, this thing has some serious output. With two native Boost Dice on this 1-cost unit, the Hydra hits above its paygrade, too. Those twin heads become double the trouble when upgraded to elite. The elite picks up an extra Action Die and Boost Die in its attack stat, and with Commander, the elite can bring the grunts up to a respectable three Boost Dice as well.
The Man-o-War is the shock trooper of the Triton arsenal. This terrifying scyphozoan has a low speed of 4 but an above average DEF stat of 3. With Hover and All Terrain, it can get into some interesting places, too. The real peanut butter to its jelly is Slippery. This allows the Man-o-War to slip away from death if the model would be hit, damaged, or destroyed by a trigger or non-swat power attack. Because you place it in its position instead, the opponent will not gain the power from killing it. This can make those attacks into your power base much less tempting. When it’s time to get the work done this unit also has a good crack back with above-average Action Dice in its attack stat and the trigger Static Shock to help clear out swarms.
Bombs away! Mollock Mortars are a (slowly) walking artillery platform. At speed 2, they don’t get around much, but their range of 6 can more than make up for that. With Aim, they can also gain an extra Boost Die on their attacks if they don’t move at all. And with Explosion tied to their gun, they can clear out clumped-up enemy units that try to pressure their firing positions. The elite adds some needed punch to this package. With Aim as an extra boost, Commander, and both having a 3 Action Dice cap, the elite and the grunt can make it rain steel down upon their enemies.
The Oppressor is a highly MOLEbile assault unit (see what we did there?) that brings a lot of synergy to the Subterran Uprising game. With Speed 5, High Mobility, and a two-boost punch with Penetrator, this mighty mole packs quite the punch. Using its action Tow, the Oppressor can bring a Mollock Mortar to the fight while still letting it aim. It can also tow a Berserker back to safety after it has ravaged enemy units. Tow also helps bring allies like the Mollock Brute up with it so that it, too, can benefit from Penetrator or join the Oppressor for a strong combined attack.
Well, that’s all there is for this Insider, crew. But hold onto your seats—the final release of the First Guardians and Ancient Ones is right around the corner!
