Fortunately, there are some modern solutions, besides all manner of shoe boxes. Thor Miniatures company produces a range of cardboard boxes designed specifically for safe storage and transport of your precious models.

There are eight different boxes currently available. All of them have foam trays inside. Some of trays are precut into squares for keeping single standard human-size miniatures, others are filled with blocks of foam cut into rasters. One is able to easily pluck out some of the foam bricks, forming any shape desired to put larger models inside.
