Jihlavská Citadela Resurrected – WZR Tournament Report (Czech Republic)
On Saturday 6th june there was a second large Warzone Resurrection only event and first one in fully tournament style, called Jihlavska citadela Resurrected. In name and spirit we concur to the series of Jihlavska citadela tournaments, probably biggest and best Warzone tournaments in Czech Republic back in late 90s. Several of us remember fondly great times we had back then, battles we fought and friends we met, and now, almost 20 years later, as Warzone itself got Resurrected and is doing well, it was time for our beloved tournament to be Resurrected as well.
In just over two years since WZR models first arrived into Czech Republic and first public game was played during 2014 spring Combo Strike Event in Brno, good playing core of players both old and new formed, people know their rules and have armies ready. We used our local gaming club in Jihlava as a place and set a date, using Diesel powered tournament rules and 1000pts Standard OOC, with Cards being voluntary. 11 players signed up, which work and some personal issues cut to 8+1/2 players during the week before. Sadly several players declared beforehand they can not attend at all, as simply there is no perfect time for everyone.
Event started on Friday evening, and (honestly, to my surprise) first friendly game began shortly after, even before tables were properly set (mental note No.1: take a week off before the next tournament so you can prepare everything) and everyone played a game or three just for fun, before we went to sleep.
On Saturday, 3 missions were played- No.4 (Retake the field), No. 3 (Retrieval) and No.6 (Take and Hold). Games were fierce, yet fair and great fun, and to my surprise the time limit of 150 minutes per game was quite enough. In the end, 6 players played the full tournament, while I became non-playing judge and all-round support, while tutoring a guy with nice Capitol army, but a single game under his belt. My girlfriend (a „½ player“, as she had to be at work till noon) then arrived and played second game with him.
But even as all three rounds were played and top 3 players declared, everyone hungered for even more Warzone action and games were played well past midnight.
To my surprise, on Sunday, despite several lack of sleep, no one quit and even more games were played (some guys ended with as much as eight games over the weekend), and whole event lasted well into afternoon, with good mood, good games and great people, till we had to call it quits. (mental note No.2: take a day or two off after the next tournament to rest up)
Honestly, 9 attendants and 6 players in „main event“ is a little less than I expected, even if it is still 1 more player than the first Jihlavska Citadela 19 years ago had, but everything else- games, atmosphere, players- was top notch and I had such a great time.
Huge thanks to Vladimir Kokolia, graphics designer who created our event’s logo, Roman Janda and his www.pieceofterrain.cz for prizes, camera and huge support in every regard, but most of all, to everyone who attended, as it was players who made this event so special.
