My A-Case – wrote by Mat Johnson

I wanted to share my experience with my case as it might help some of you with the decision of what to buy to protect your models.

A-case have gone down a very different route to every other make of miniature case that I have seen, as there is no foam inserts to the case, instead you magnetize the base of your model and it sticks to the metal shelves inside the case.

The case itself is actually quite small (I have the Victory case, the smaller of the two) but don’t let that fool you, because of the magnetized concept of the case, it can hold many more of your minis than a similarly sized conventional case could do, as there is no foam taking up space and the small size is matched by the fact the case is surprisingly light as well, which makes it really great for transporting your army round, we have all seen people at the local gaming center struggling through the door with huge heavy cases, and a lot of us have been that person, it’s not fun! but my A-case really is so unobtrusive that it makes transporting the models a total breeze, even if you have to use public transport!

THE TEST

At first I’ll admit to being dubious about the level of protection this would offer, as i don’t have a huge army to put in the case, so I was worried about the models sliding about and knocking into each other.

After speaking with the owner of A-case and hearing a few stories about what people have done to show the level of protection, I magnetized the bases of my models and gave the case a test (I had the glue on standby in case things went wrong) I put the models in the case, a few on each shelf, closed the zip, went into the garden and threw the case as high as I could, whilst putting a decent spin on it as well (I thought if anything is gonna cause some damage then this should do the trick).

First time round I caught the case, opened it up, and all my models were exactly where I had placed them, the magnets are really strong!

Then the Mrs decided to intervene and said that since she hadn’t seen me do it, she didn’t believe me, so I threw it again, went to catch it and…… well the sun must’ve been in my eyes (it wasn’t) or someone pushed me (they didn’t) as I completely failed to catch the case and watched in slow motion as it instead went between my arms and hit the ground! Now I should say that I was on the grass for this test but I was still terrified to open the case and see what my bungled catch had done to my models 🙁

It took me a while to pluck up the courage to open the case as I was convinced I would’ve done some serious damage, but when I did, I was absolutely dumbstruck, all my models were fine! To be completely honest they had slid a little bit, but given what had happened I was expecting so much worse!!!

MY VERDICT

To be fair, everyone knows there are lots of other case designs out there, but for me they all seem to be variations on the same theme, foam inserts, which just doesn’t do it for me, swords or any other fine point tend to bend over time, especially if its fine-cast (ugh) or resin, and the sheer size of the case is a real turn off, this is where the A-case comes into its own, the models are stood as if they are in a display stand, and the case is so small and light that it’s great for players who do a lot of travelling in order to game or do a lot of tournaments. Yes it is expensive, but it’s a premium product, and as such its price is comparable to other premium cases on the market. At the end of the day it’s up to each of you to decide if the models you have spent all the time and attention on are worth the best protection you can give them, and for me the answer is yes, which is why my models will be living in my A-case from now onwards.

B.T.W

I have plans to personalize my case, I’m working on a stencil to spray on the shelves, and I plan on getting some badges embroidered to put on the Velcro loop strip on the front of the case. And further down the line I’m working on lighting the case to really show off my models when I visit my flgs 😉
