Bloodwood and Beastmen

Preview a Hero and a Monster Group from Oath of the Outcast

Oath of the Outcast, a Hero and Monster Collection for Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition invites you and your fellow players to battle alongside to brave heroes and ferocious monsters.

These heroes and monster groups, previously only available in the first edition of Descent, feature completely redesigned art and figure sculpts, matching the aesthetic of Descent Second Edition. Alongside the fifteen plastic figures in this expansion, two brand new quests are also included, designed to highlight the abilities of the heroes and monsters within this expansion.

Oath of the Outcast contains four different heroes and three distinct monster groups, and today, we’ll take a closer look at one of those heroes and one complete monster group: Laurel of Bloodwood and the beastmen!

Heritage of Battle

As one of four heroes available to you in Oath of the Outcast, Laurel of Bloodwood is a dangerous elf, and her ancestral skills can serve a group of heroes to good effect. It was Laurel’s ancestors that soaked the barren plains of Di’zon with the blood of 10,000 barbaric invaders. Returning the following morning, the elven defenders found saplings as red as scarlet had sprung up, covering the entire expanse. Laurel is proud of her heritage: having fulfilled her years of service, she now travels the world, displaying the skill and cunning that belongs to a sister of Bloodwood.

When Laurel of Bloodwood joins your hero party, her high stamina grants her the versatility to trigger special abilities whenever you need them and move freely around the battlefield, making sure she’s always where you need her. Her hero ability makes her even more deadly in her fight against evil, by dealing an extra damage whenever she performs a Ranged attack and her range exceeds the distance to the target.

Laurel’s heroic feat offers greater opportunities for a high-powered attack from the safety of distance. Triggering Laurel’s heroic feat as an action allows you to make an attack – but this attack cannot miss. A miss is treated as a blank result, and to add insult to injury, the attack gains ten additional range and an automatic surge! By using Laurel’s feat at the proper moment, you can cut down a fleeing enemy or snipe a master monster hiding behind minions. And since the range will almost certainly exceed the distance to the target, you’ll still gain an additional damage from Laurel’s hero ability.

Ferocity and Cruel Intellect

Savage and vile, beastmen inhabited the darkness beneath Terrinoth even before the first hamlets of civilization sprouted across its plains. Base beyond the most feral of animals, they congregate only to hunt and feed. The larger the pack, the longer it has been since they last feasted on a fresh kill, and with Oath of the Outcast, you must face their threat and the threat of two other monster groups!

The beastmen pose a deadly threat whenever the heroes face them, combining bestial rage with a low cunning. The beastmen possess attack dice well suited to melee attacks, but their main appeal comes from the Ravage ability that they all share. Most monsters in Descent are limited to one attack action per turn under normal circumstances, but beastmen have the privilege of using both of their actions to attack. With that kind of potential damage, beastmen can rip through a hero party with unparalleled speed.

Master beastmen possess another ability that makes prolonged fights worse for the heroes. The Command ability means that each minion within three spaces of the master beastman may reroll a die on each of its attacks. This power greatly reduces the chances that an attack will miss, and even allows you to push for more damage. This ability is not restricted, and minion monsters will be able to reroll a die on each of their attacks. Best of all, the ability is not limited to beastmen! No matter what kind of minion monster you use, it may reroll a die whenever it attacks near a master beastman, enhancing the combat abilities of any monster.
