A Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game Classic Returns

The Revised Secrets of Arkham Deluxe Expansion Is Now Available

“Akeley’s disappearance establishes nothing. People found nothing amiss in his house despite the bullet-marks on the outside and inside. It was just as though he had walked out casually for a ramble in the hills and failed to return. There was not even a sign that a guest had been there, or that those horrible cylinders and machines had been stored in the study.”

–H.P. Lovecraft, The Whisperer in Darkness

Delve the terrors of H.P. Lovecraft’s eerie, fictional New England with the revised edition of the Secrets of Arkham deluxe expansion for Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, now available at your local retailer!

Situated beneath rolling hills strewn with dark, untouched woods, the city of Arkham is home to many of the darkest and strangest of all secrets within H.P. Lovecraft’s fictional world.

Here, in Arkham, cultists and investigators weave and unweave dreadful conspiracies that could spell disaster to all humanity. Here, the boundaries between our worlds and those beyond wear just a touch thinner than elsewhere, and the energies that spill through haunt the dreams of the more psychically attuned individuals among us. Here, strange creatures shudder beneath the ground, and demented laughter echoes through the halls of the asylum. Here, those unfortunate few who catch a glimpse of reality beyond the veil find themselves poised at the edge of disaster.

With 165 cards that include three copies each of fifty-one player cards as well as an alternate story deck of twelve story cards, Secrets of Arkham adds to Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game all of the suspense, terror, and desperation that one might expect from the heart of Lovecraft’s fictional New England.

The Nexus of Mysteries

The city of Arkham and the daring investigators of the city’s academic institution, Miskatonic University, provide focus for many of H.P. Lovecraft’s darkest tales, and the twelve story cards in Secrets of Arkham provide an alternative focus for the struggles of Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game.

After you’ve explored the numerous interactions between the stories from the game’s Core Set, the stories from Secrets of Arkham open new gateways to terror and disaster. Will you unleash rampant devastation by uncovering The Thing at the Gate (Secrets of Arkham, 57)?

Will your Obsessive Research (Secrets of Arkham, 53) increase your chances of successfully confronting the alien challenges ahead of you?

Will you recklessly unleash all The Secrets of Arkham (Secrets of Arkham, 51) simultaneously? And can the world possibly survive the ensuing chain of events?

The stories from Secrets of Arkham introduce a dizzying array of eldritch interactions, seamlessly exploring new wrinkles in the core game’s mechanics, but all while fundamentally altering your narrative experiences.

Things from Beyond

“They were pinkish things about five feet long; with crustaceous bodies bearing vast pairs of dorsal fins or membraneous wings and several sets of articulated limbs, and with a sort of convoluted ellipsoid, covered with multitudes of very short antennae, where a head would ordinarily be.”

–H.P. Lovecraft, The Whisperer in Darkness

Originally released as the first of the game’s deluxe expansions, this revised edition of Secrets of Arkham is updated to include three copies of each player card, along with the official errata to Things in the Ground (Secrets of Arkham, 31) and Poltergeist (Secrets of Arkham, 37).

Moreover, it supports seven of the game’s eight factions equally (as the original edition pre-dated the introduction of the game’s eighth faction, The Order of the Silver Twilight), and that means you’ll find new means to explore your favorite strategies, no matter which faction currently haunts your dreams. You’ll find cards that build upon the Day and Night themes originally introduced in the Dreamlands cycle of Asylum Packs. You’ll find daring Investigators and forbidden Tomes. You’ll find maddening Spells, furtive Cultists, and power-hungry Sorcerers, and you’ll find Deep Ones rising from the coastal tides near Innsmouth.

Whichever faction you favor, in Secrets of Arkham, you’ll find new means to enhance your decks or to develop new ones. For example, fans of the alien Mi-Go will find nine Mi-Go characters (three copies each of three different characters) that greatly enhance all members of this race of spacefaring fungoids, and the deck list below serves to illustrate how these characters can assume a central role in a dedicated Mi-Go strategy built from two copies of the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game core set, one Secrets of Arkham, and a handful of select Asylum Packs.

“Mi-Go Madness”

Characters (30):
3x Ageless Mi-Go (Secrets of Arkham, 23)
3x Black Dog (Words of Power, 29)
2x Degenerate Ghoul (Core Set, 132)
3x Harvesting Mi-Go (The Twilight Beckons, 11)
2x Hungry Dark Young (Core Set, 131)
3x Mi-Go Commander (Secrets of Arkham, 20)
3x Mi-Go Observer (The Curse of the Jade Emperor, 38)
2x Mi-Go Scout (Core Set, 129)
3x Mi-Go Surgeon (Secrets of Arkham, 19)
2x Mi-Go Warrior (Core Set, 130)
2x Priestess of Bubastis (Core Set, 123)
2x Y’Golonac (Core Set, 122)

Supports (8):
2x Altar of the Blessed (Core Set, 135)
3x Inter-dimensional Transporter (The Twilight Beckons, 12)
3x Mi-Go Skull (Into Tartarus, 100)

Events (12):
2x Burrowing Beneath (Core Set, 137)
3x Feed Her Young (Written and Bound, 11)
2x Horrid Mutation (Core Set, 138)
3x Mi-Go Dreams (Sleep of the Dead, 94)
2x Political Demonstration (Core Set, 144)

Once they establish their foothold upon our world, the Mi-Go characters in this deck become terrifying in their tenacity. They are extremely difficult to defeat in struggles, as they all gain Terror, Combat, Arcane, and Investigation icons. They are hard to kill with wounds, as they all gain Toughness, and they’re hard to outmaneuver because they won’t just beat you in the icon struggles, but in the skill contest, as well, thanks to Altar of the Blessed.

No, your best hope to defeat these strange, alien creatures in the contests of Call of Cthulhu is simply to outrace them, winning stories before they have the opportunity to assemble in force. Barring that, you’ll have to hope that you can eliminate them all in one fell swoop, clearing the board, forcing them to rebuild from scratch… and then you’ll have to hope they don’t just flood back onto the board thanks to Mi-Go Dreams.

What Will You Make of Arkham’s Secrets?

Much as the Mi-Go Surgeon, Mi-Go Commander, and Ageless Mi-Go boost all your Mi-Go by supplying Arcane and Combat icons, along with Toughness +1, Secrets of Arkham lends support to all your Call of Cthulhu deck-building experiments.

Build a new world, or destroy the one we inhabit. What will you make of the Secrets of Arkham?
