Beyond the Gates of Antares: Large Models, Multiple Order Dice, and Vehicles!

Our weekly Beyond the Gates of Antares playtesting sessions at Warlord HQ have grown seemingly exponentially over the past few months – so much so that we’ve now outgrown our original gaming room, and have had to expand – there are teams of Boromites clashing with Algoryn and Concord all over the place – and there have been rumours of some unidentified forces gathering in the background…

One exciting development has been that – now that we have starter armies released for the Algoryn, Boromites, and Concord, we’ve started to hear the rumblings of something larger… and there have been sightings of some kit-bashed, converted and cobbled-together larger models being concocted by the Warlord staff members…

…all of which has (for better or for worse) set Rick Priestley’s brain into overdrive – and this week, we have another chunk of rules for you Beta testers… this time, we have three new modules… Large Models, Multiple Order Dice, and Vehicles as you need all three together for them to be playable!

Large Models

So far we have been dealing with infantry and models of similar size, and our rules for line of sight, shooting accuracy, and movement are based on the capabilities of a human trooper. Now we shall introduce larger models into the game and we shall ascribe the term ‘large’ to distinguish them from standard sized model.

Multiple Order Dice (MOD)

Until now we have only considered units that are activated by one Order Dice. Now we are going to introduce a new concept, namely units that have two, three or more Order Dice and which can therefore make two, three or more actions in each turn. We refer to these as multiple order dice units or MOD units for short.

Vehicles

In advanced societies such as that of the Concord it is rare to find large machines that are not capable of autonomous action, and in that respect there is little to differentiate vehicles from drones. Transport vehicles don’t require drivers or crew to operate them. Armoured fighting vehicles – the Antarean equivalent of tanks and armoured cars – don’t rely upon human crews to drive them or utilise their weapons. We have already met weapon drones, which are small autonomous vehicles to all intents. In effect, practically everything we would think of as a vehicle is really a drone of sorts, even if it carries one or more humans for whatever reason. Some, mostly small, vehicles do have an operator interface, although none wholly rely upon them: for example skimmers and bikes.
