Fiction Friday: The Feral Nexus

Greetings Wargamers. We thought we would celebrate this weekend’s 10% off sale by taking a look again at the Feral Nexus.

Until the end of Sunday, February 14th you can get 10% off everything in the Icarus Miniatures store by using the code ICARUS10 at checkout. This sale is to help us release the Feral Nexus miniatures as soon as possible, so we thought we’d do a #FictionFriday looking at the background of one of the Nexus’ most iconic units.

The Feral Nexus

The Feral Nexus call back to a time in Nexus History before they began their conquest of the stars. Early Nexus lived in tribes across their home-world and were regularly at war with one another.

In fact, the ancient Nexus slaughtered themselves for centuries, their technological progress practically non-existent other than to create new ways of killing one another. It wasn’t until the Praesidians first came across the Nexus home-world that the tribes banded together to repel their alien invaders. Despite lifetimes of warfare, the weapons and technology of the Nexus was nothing compared to those wielded by the Praesidians.

These strange, blue skinned creatures, swept across the planet crushing tribe after tribe. When the chieftain of largest tribe surrendered to the Praesidians, the alien conquerors offered to bring the Nexus to the galactic stage, and promised them richest and technology of their wildest dreams. The majority of Nexus agreed to this, being impressed by the way the technology their invaders had so easily defeated them.

There were some tribes however, who held to the more barbaric traditions of the Nexus and refused this new allegiance. The Praesidians exiled those tribes to one of Nexus’ moons, under the conditions they would be left to their own devices, but could never leave the surface. Over the subsequent centuries, the exiled Nexus descended into the most primitive warfare, becoming savage and feral, often eating the flesh of their defeated enemies.

Varakos the Saviour

Around the start of the Second Nexus War, General Varakos traveled to Nexus’ moon. He decided that the supposed savagery of his exiled cousins would compliment his campaign of terror perfectly. He tracked down the leader of the largest tribe on the moon and challenged him to single combat.

When the leader of these Feral Nexus lay dead at Varakos’ feet, the general informed the tribe’s second to gather as many warriors as she could; the Nexus were going to war!

The feral Nexus are now used as spearhead troops. They care little for their lives, simply relishing in the bloodshed. This makes them perfect for the first wave in an assault.

On the battlefield, the feral Nexus are unpredictable. They are deadly warriors, but are prone abandoning the battle to feast on the fallen. Even among most Nexus, this is considered disgusting (though there are a number who eat the flesh of sentient creatures in secret), but it is tolerated because of the effect it has on enemy morale.

Feral Nexus from Icarus Miniatures

Feral Nexus wear significantly less armour than their “civilized” kin. What little armour they do where is usually made from scavenged metal or bone.

When they are not on the battlefield, the Feral Nexus are chained inside cages aboard Nexus ships. There may be as many as 50 to a cage, often fighting one another if they are close enough.

Just before they are deployed, the Feral Nexus are given a pistol, their single piece of advanced technology. Apart from this, they carry knives, usually made from bone or stone.

As mentioned above, we’re having a sale this weekend in part so that we can fund the release of the Feral Nexus Miniatures sooner!

Here’s a sneak peak at early work on the Ferals:

a1
The Feral Nexus will come in two sculpts, each posed in a dynamic, aggressive stance that suits their character.

We should have final renders to show off next week, but until then; we’d love to hear what you think of them so far!
