The Mysteries of Yig

A Preview of Forsaken Lore, an Expansion for Eldritch Horror

Should any human ever incur the wrath of Yig, the Father of Serpents will claim that person’s child and transform the infant into a terrible snake-like creature, horrible to look upon and seemingly immortal.

Last month we announced Forsaken Lore, an expansion for Eldritch Horror. In Forsaken Lore the fate of the world grows even more uncertain, as the malignant influence of Yig, the Father of Serpents, extends across the globe. Previously defeated Ancient Ones attempt to reclaim the world once again, forcing Investigators to solve new mysteries to keep them at bay. All the while, terrible new Epic Monsters and dangerous new Encounters keep Investigators racing across the globe to stave off the collapse of the world.

With eighty-eight new Research cards and nearly one hundred and fifty new encounters, along with a host of epic monsters, even the most skilled of investigators will face a challenge unlike any before.

In today’s preview, we’ll take a closer look at three of Yig’s six mystery cards.

Rise of the Serpent People

Long thought dead, some serpent people are returning from centuries of dormancy. Although few in number, they are masters of combining science and magic.

Yig’s Serpent People are working ceaselessly to prepare the way for the coming of their master. Their myriad activities span the globe, and are beginning to draw the attention of investigators seeking the cause of the strange and eerie occurrences around the world.

The Serpent People’s mastery of both science and magic make them insidious and dangerous servants to the mighty Yig. In order to defeat them, Investigators will need to keep their wits about them and their eyes wide open.

In the Rise of the Serpent People mystery, Eldritch tokens equal to half the number of Investigators are spawned randomly across the globe. Investigators will need to make their way around the world to these locations and try to determine the reasons behind the unusual events taking place there. By testing their Observation (-1) Investigators can use the knowledge they have gained through previous research by spending two Clues to place the Eldritch token on the Rise of the Serpent People mystery card. Once all of the Eldritch tokens spawned for this mystery are placed onto the mystery card at the conclusion of a Mythos Phase, the mystery is solved.

Be warned, however, that the Serpent People are not the only culprits behind these unnatural occurrences. Yig’s Cultists seek to protect the secret knowledge being used to bring their horrible master into our world. Careless investigators may find themselves ambushed by one of Yig’s cultists. Take heed, and proceed with caution.

Descendants of Yig

Unfortunately for investigators, the Serpent People aren’t the only creatures working to call forth Yig. His Children are fiercely protective, and their loyalty to their father is boundless. The Descendants of Yig mystery requires investigators to go head to head with the Children of Yig Epic Monster.

The Children of Yig spawns in a random location. This may prove to be a double edged sword for your Investigators, since they cannot predict where the Children may be found. If the Children of Yig spawns at the far reaches of the map, Investigators will have time to plan their attack, but must spend precious time trying to reach the site of battle. However, should they spawn near Investigators, you may be caught off guard and drawn into a fight unprepared.

The Children of Yig Epic Monster has a Toughness equal to the number of Investigators (+2). While quite strong, the real danger of this monster lies in it’s ability to elude your investigators. Unlike most monsters, the Children of Yig requires an Observation (-1) test, instead of the usual Willpower test. Failing the Observation test allows the cunning Children to slip away, reappearing somewhere else.

Failing to pass the Observation test against the Children of Yig multiple times could result in your Investigators engaged in a wild chase across the globe, and each turn spent tracking Yig’s Children is time slipping away from your chances of keeping Yig out of our world.

K’n-yan Unearthed

Just outside of Binger, Oklahoma, an opening has been discovered on top of a large mound. It leads to the ancient and forgotten realm of K’n-Yan.

Some of those who wish to bring Yig crashing into our world have gathered in K’n-yan, the ancient city deep underground. When Investigators reveal the K’n-yan Unearthed mystery, the entrance has been revealed. Located on space six of the game board, Investigators can choose to explore the city.

Deep below ground, Investigators courageous enough to descend to the strange city may be faced with all manner of encounters. Drawn from Yig’s Special Encounter card deck, Investigators may find themselves face to face with Serpent people, or the mysterious remains of their mystical and scientific experiments. Eerie stories regarding this place have been told, and Investigators may discover that these stories hold truth. Successfully surviving encounters in K’n-yan allows Investigators to place Eldritch tokens on the K’n–Yan Unearthed mystery card. At the end of Mythos Phase, if there are Eldritch tokens on the mystery card equal to half the number of investigators, the mystery is solved.
