3D printed terrain building for tabletop gaming

The time has finally arrived.  After months of hard work, late night hours, and dedication to the project, SimplePolyTrix, a company dedicated to creating downloadable terrain files for tabletop, has announced the 2-Week Countdown for its highly anticipated Kickstarter event.  Beginning Friday, July 21, the 30-day long campaign will offer some of the best 3D terrain models available on the market.

In total, some 40+ models will be bundled together and available as STL files to be downloaded and printed on your home 3D printer or through numerous outsource vendors such as Shapeways.  Picture above, the Power Facility is one of but several dozen.

Unlike many Kickstarters with intentions of raising funds to support the operation, SimplePolytrix’s campaign is to achieve a better understanding of how much of an interest there is in 3D printable terrain.  As a secondary goal, future models created by SimplePolytrix could be print-tested on a 3D printer rather than currently outsourcing.  This can provide quicker finalizations in order to get the model to the customer quicker.

While the popular Stretch Goals will not be an option in this campaign, multiple tier levels of pledges will be.  Each tier will include the entire collection of STL files to download (as well as special Makerbot files for those with that printer), but as an added incentive, each tier higher will offer a Lifetime Discount for all future models created by SimplePolytrix.  They plan on continuing to create terrain models for years to come, and those who take advantage of this Kickstarter will enjoy discounts from 10% up to 50% indefinitely.

Even if you don’t own a 3D printer or currently have interest in seeking services, consider this:  3D printers have reached affordability to the average consumer with price ranging as low as a few hundred dollars.  Comparing this to just a few years ago, the prices have significantly dropped and will continue doing so.  This is a technology that will continue to advance and become even more cost efficient to where it is likely to become a household product in everyone’s homes in the near future.  When that time arrives, these STL files could be waiting for you on your storage device, after having backed the Kickstarter with such a reasonable low price on July 21.
