Privateer Press Announces New Edition of WARMACHINE Tabletop Game: MKIV

July 27th, 2022

Woodinville, WA – Privateer Press officially announced today the launch of an all-new edition of the award-winning tabletop game WARMACHINE this fall. The new edition, WARMACHINE: MKIV, will update and streamline rules, enable free digital availability of model statistics and rules through an all new WARMACHINE mobile app, and introduce new play formats that will make it easier for new players to join the community while maintaining a structure for long-term players to ensure models from previous editions still have a play environment.

“A new edition provides an opportunity for lapsed players to re-engage and for new players to jump in for the first time,” said Matthew D. Wilson, creative director and owner of Privateer Press. “For the existing community of players, it’s a chance to renew excitement and to introduce the game to new friends. It’s also an opportunity to put our twenty years of experience to work to make the best version of WARMACHINE that has ever been done.”

For the first time, Privateer Press will be releasing all game rules and model stats through a newly developed WARMACHINE app, allowing for instantaneous updates as new models are released. Players will no longer need to rely on FAQs or annual postings to ensure they have the most current and accurate rules, as they will be updated universally in the app, which will be free for gameplay use. Further, the WARMACHINE app will include an optional subscription plan that will provide cloud storage for army builds as well as regular monthly premium content including fiction and lore, scenarios, and Organized Play resources.

And beginning with MKIV, all models from Privateer Press will be created using 3D printing technology, an upgrade in quality and consistency from metal, resin, and plastic. “We believe 3D printing is the future,” said Wilson. “We know that 3D-printed miniatures are becoming more mainstream through a multitude of services, and in many ways it solves the challenges of manufacturing today. In the end, we know the quality will speak for itself.” Models manufactured using 3D printing technology enable the production of complex parts that reduce the required assembly of kits as well as new features that enhance the game experience. Warjacks, for instance, the giant automatons at the center of the game’s battles, have been designed to be easily equipped with small magnets included in the kit that allow for customized armament loadouts between games.

Three all-new armies will debut this fall alongside the beta version of the WARMACHINE app. The beta period will be carried out through the end of the year with the final release expected in January of 2023, marking the official launch of MKIV Organized Play. A fourth army will follow in Q2 of 2023 along with expansion materials for the original three armies. In a departure from previous editions, MKIV armies will be released across a limited number of SKUs, including a Core Starter Box that presents a complete, ready-to-play army with options. An expansion box and four a la carte SKUs make up the remainder of what each army will entail in the first year of the new edition’s release.

For the remainder of 2022, official events will continue with the current MKIII rules and formats. Official Organized Play support for the MKIV edition will begin in January of 2023.

With the new MKIV edition, HORDES, the companion game for WARMACHINE, is being rolled under the WARMACHINE brand with comparable rules, model, and play environment modifications and updates. The games will no longer be sustained as different brands. The first warlock-led HORDES armies are expected to release summer of 2023.
